Question

How do I get rid of ants in my heliconia potted plants.

I have potted my heliconia plants in 10 gallon pots for those special exotic species. I live in south florida. Ants have infested the potting mix within 3 weeks of potting. Can I drench the mix with 3 tbsp/gal solution or will this concentrate harm the plants? Obviously, I will have to place the pots on landscaping fabric in the future.

The granules are just designed for lawn treatment, and they won't control scorpions. We recommend the concentrate version (http://www.spectracide.com/Products...). Just keep your dog out of the treated area until the gravel is completely dry.

If you look within the use location directions on the label, you'll see the specific bugs listed out. Chinch bugs and grubs are both listed under "Lawns," then within "Underground Insects/Thatch-Infesting Insects." You'll mix 1.5 fl oz (3 Tbsp) in one gallon of water for each 120 sq ft of lawn you treat.

Generally, pets can go back onto the lawn as soon as the spray has dried. If you have animals that graze on treated vegetation in large quantities, such as pet rabbits, chickens or livestock, we recommend keeping them off of the lawn for at least 21 days or not using the spray at all.

Question

Pet safety and timing of application

I need to ask when is it safe for pets to be on the lawn after using this insect killer? Also, I just treated the lawn with weed stop with crabgrass killer. How long do I need to wait to apply the bug killer? Both applications are tank sprayers.

In addition, I read the instructions on line about how much to the gallon to mix. It stated for ticks etc., 1.5 oz. / gallon for 240 sq.ft. It also says if the infestaton is bad to use 6 oz. / 1000 sq.ft. Aren't both of these statements the same? Thanks

Pets can re-enter the treatment area as soon as the area has dried completely -- we would allow for several hours of drying time, just to be safe. You can also apply Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer for Lawns & Landscapes as soon as your Weed Stop application has dried.

We're checking on the use rate question and will get back to you!

Question

Why do I still have ants!?

I used the granules in my spreader to treat my yard. I set the spreader to the amount needed for fire ants and wet the ground after treatment as recommended. I still have ants and new mounds are popping up. I have seen dead "doodle bugs" and other beatle type bugs, but the ants are going strong. Why could this be happening?

Watering in the granules too heavily will not allow them to penetrate ant mounds completely, causing fire ants to pick up and move somewhere else. We advise you to reapply, being careful to water in very lightly; if you still notice ant mounds popping up, please let us know (we think this will do the trick, though).

Correct, our combination weed/insect control product will not kill ticks. You should never mix pesticide products yourself, however; you'll need to apply separately (just allow the first product to dry completely before you spray the second).

Question

Does This Kill Tropical Rat Mites and/or Northern Fowl Mites?

My husband and I keep getting bit severely, like 100+ bites every 1-2 weeks for the past 7 weeks. Needless to say, we are miserable from the intense itching, which is more acute than itching from mosquitoes or fleas. A Medical Doctor has confirmed bug bites. We haven't been able to trap any human biting bugs, but we suspect Tropical Rat Mites because our neighbor was poisoning rats up until about four weeks ago. There was also an abandoned bird nest on the side of our house, so it could also be Northern Fowl Mites. Both types of mites are found in the area of CA in which we live. So I've decide to spray the yard and fog the house with insecticide. Our local hardware store carries the Triazicide product. Is it effective of these specific types of mites? And if so, how long will it last in the yard?

Generally, you'll use 1.5 fl oz (3 Tbsp) per gallon of water to cover 240 sq ft. If you convert the yardage you offered, that equates to 13,500 sq ft (which seems very large for a campsite). You would have to refill your sprayer many times (as well as buy a lot of concentrate). We're guessing you meant feet instead of yards; going by that assumption, your campsite would be about 1,500 sq ft. You would need to fill your sprayer about six times in that case.
