Question

Product shelf life

Last year we applied Spectracide Weed Stop granules with great results, in 2 weeks all the weeds were gone. This year we applied it 17 days ago and the weeds are still actively growing. We used a leftover, unopened bag from last year that has been sitting in the garage. We also had a cold snap for a few days, night time temps dipped into the 30s, daytime 50s and 60s. Could use of an older bag or lower night time temps affect the performance of Weed Stop? Can we re-apply? How long should we wait?

Using an older bag doesn't matter, but the cooler nighttime temperatures is likely slowing down your results. Please give it a few more days and let us know what kind of results you're getting. In your area, we advise you to make a second application six weeks after the first anyway, but if you're not getting weed kill in a week or so, we will likely recommend that you apply again.

Question

It rained within 24 hr. Does that adversely affect the preemergent portion or just the weed killer?

Missouri weather can be quite unpredictable. We had some brief showers (not in the forecast) about 18-20 hrs after application. 7 days later, the weeds look fine and are beginning to flower. Do I need to reapply this product or can I use the hose end sprayer with weed stop only, no crabgrass preventer? And how long does the preemergent last?

Question

Did I apply too early? I'm in Maryland, and I don't see dandelions around yet and the weeds in my yard still look dormant.

I went by the recommendation of the person who sold it to me at the garden store, but he also told me I could overseed 48 hours after application (which I now see was incorrect), so I'm worried that his recommendation about timing was wrong as well. I see some dandelion greens but just barely, definitely no flowers, and none of the other weeds in my lawn have really become active. Will I need to reapply later? If so, when? Will it still work to prevent crabgrass from returning even if it was applied to early to kill the broadleaf weeds?

Oh no! Right, you'll need to wait at least 10 weeks before overseeding after using this product. It might have been a little early, but you will still benefit from the pre-emergent. If you're seeing a lot of weeds in your lawn in four to six weeks, apply again (or use one of our lawn broadleaf weed killers, which have shorter waiting periods before seeding).

There's a 10-week waiting period between using this product and reseeding. If you spray Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns Concentrate instead, you would only need to wait three weeks between treating and seeding. Another option is Spectracide Weed & Grass Killer Concentrate, which would kill everything in your lawn (including your existing grass) but allow for reseeding in only seven days. Good luck!

Question

When is the best time to Apply this product?

I know you should normally put down a crabgrass preventer before the crabgrass germinates. So in my region (ohio) I put it down in early April. Is this to early for the weed stop to work since alot of broadleaf weeds have not started growing yet?

March/April is the right time to apply. A good rule of thumb is to spread the granules when you start to see dandelions appear.

Question

cambriacastlecavaliers@aol.com

I sprayed this product on my weeds around 6:00 PM. It got dark an hour later. No rain in the forecast but some dew in the morning.
I am in CA.
Did I spray too late in the day? Does it need the sun to dry? Should I have sprayed earlier?
Will this still work or should I re-spray?

Thanks :)

To answer this question correctly, we need to first ask which product you're using -- the reference product this is attached to is the granular Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns plus Crabgrass Preventer, but you talk about spraying. Please let us know the name on your product's label and we'll be happy to help.

Question

Looking for advice about applying Spectracide granules or liquid in Desert

I live in the Palm Springs area and have a bermuda lawn. The lawn is at about 40% crab grass. The daytime temperature here in July hovers between 100 to 105 with evening and night-time around 88 to 95. We irrigate lawns 3 times a day for about 6 minutes per station in the summer.

Can I apply this product during the heat of summer and which product would be best and when should it be applied for maximum effect.

Thanks.

Wow, that's hot! We don't recommend applying this or any of our other weed control products at temperatures that high, unfortunately. On Bermudagrass, you should wait until daytime temperatures are in the low 80s. These granules are great for applying in the fall to reduce the amount of crabgrass you see in the spring. Alternatively, you can spray one of our liquid Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns plus Crabgrass Killer formulas when it cools down.
